FORUM OVERVIEW

Since 2021 Oregon China Council (OCC) has worked with Oregon’s sister states of Fujian Province and Tianjin Municipality to organize the Annual International China Oregon Forum on Climate Change & Sustainability.

As we approach 2025, we look back at the past year of record-breaking temperatures on land and in the seas, increased flooding, wildfires and hurricanes worldwide, biodiversity loss through a high rate of species extinction and increasing human suffering. Yet, humanity owns the technology and human energy to effectively reverse climate change.

To work toward this potential, Oregon China Council brings Oregon businesses, educational and cultural institutions, academics and scientists together with their Chinese counterparts to tackle these problems. Through these efforts, both Oregon and Chinese stakeholders benefit. This effective cooperation can produce a model that serves to encourage and inspire other subnational efforts toward the goal of promoting a critical consensus to act at the national level.

Past Forums have promoted sub national level joint efforts on climate change by bringing together leadership from Crater Lake National Park and Wuyishan National Park for collaborative work for a number of years. The event has also teamed scientists from Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University and Oregon State University for multiple years. In 2023-2024 a scientist from Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University spent a year exchange working with a scientist at Oregon State University College of Forestry and both spoke at the 2023 forum about their research. Many more scientists from both Oregon and China have met through the forums on issues of sustainable port practice, community renewable energy, green financing, agrivoltaics, circular economy, Lithium-ion batteries, cross laminated timber panels, and sustainable landscaping and urban design.

Oregon China Council and our Chinese Sister States are promoting cooperation and collaboration in the face of the urgent situation. The goal of the forum is to encourage scientists, businesses, state, county and municipal political leadership, organizations, students, concerned community residents, academics and other professionals to meet with their peers in China through this event and determine how they can work together to address the challenges we are facing in our respective countries.
